Grace and I were best friends throughout high school.  I lived on Perry Ct in Landover and she lived a few blocks away on Darby Rd.  Every school day throughout our time at Bladensburg, we walked (in rain and snow and sleet) to and from the school bus stop.  And while we walked, we made our own sunshine.  We talked about everything:  our hopes and dreams and plans.  Grace was an avid reader.  For several weeks she gave me daily summaries of Ivanhoe always managing to leave me hanging and waiting til the next installment.

Grace confided how very much she looked forward to seeing the new century dawn on 1 Jan 2001.  We gleefully calculated how old we would be in that distant future and we contemplated the marvels that we were sure would have come to pass.

I thought about her on that day and wished that I could have shared it with her.

In 1974, shortly after the birth of my son, Aaron, I was visiting my folks on Perry Ct.  I picked up the phone and called the Musgroves to catch up on news from Grace.  It was then that I discovered that she had died in childbirth the previous year.

I think about her often and recall her infectious smile, her boundless energy and abundant enthusiasm.

Thanks Grace for making those long trudges to the bus stop so lively and inspiring.

Thanks, Barbara, for those wonderful memories you shared about Grace.  Hinda and I were closer to Grace during our junior high years and I always thought she was way "older" and wiser than her chronicle age.  Such fondness you had for one another.  I believe we learn about friendship when we are young and carry those lessons with us through our lives.  Thanks for sharing....
